Some of those players were a disgrace

Rotherham boss Ronnie Moore was still concerned about his side’s position in the league before kick off yesterday but he needn’t have worried, we helped him out big style with a dreadful performance.

Moore was delighted with the way his side played but was also conscious of the wonderful help given to them by our goalkeeper Brian Jensen.

“Right from the first minute we were up for it,” said Moore after the game. “We were up for it, the attitude was magnificent and we could have scored more goals.

“Our passing was good and at times Jody Morris showed the skill we know he has. Michael Proctor sprayed the ball about, laid on two goals and he deserved to scored from the penalty.

“I don’t think we reached the same level in the second half as we did in the first but we were 2-0 up and cruising. I am glad Burnley didn’t score because it would have been backs to the wall for us if they had.”

He then spoke about the goals and managed to refer to Jensen with all three.

“Martin Butler got the opening goal and when you consider what we paid for him and what we let Alan Lee go for he is an excellent player and brave as well,” Moore added.

“I was glad their keeper came out for Buts’ goal because there was no way he was ever going to get there.

“The second goal came from great movement and Robbie Stockdale did well to get there as he looked second favourite against their keeper. It was a massive relief when that went in.

“The penalty put the seal on it and I am glad Proctor scored because if their keeper had stood up he would have saved it. But it showed how confident Proc is.”

He ended by talking about the crowd and then next week.

“The crowd were brilliant as well, they really got behind us right from the kick off although our performance helped.

“It was a tremendous performance and now we have to kick on and go to Walsall where we owe Gillingham a favour by doing our best. We have to be nice and positive and finish with as many points as we can.”

I think it is fair to say that Stan Ternent was not as happy as his counterpart and this week it was the players who took the blame for the defeat.

“Firstly I’d like to congratulate the players on maintaining First Division status,” he said after the defeat. “Secondly I’d like to apologise to the fans for today’s performance which was woeful,” he added.

“Unfortunately for me, I cannot do a lot about it with the players. I can’t fine them but I can bring them in morning and night. Some of those players were a disgrace to the Claret & Blue shirt today.

“Rest assure, if I can, I will most certainly do something about it.”

And then amazingly in his brief three point press conference he actually chose to praise himself.

“Thirdly, I consider it to be one of my best achievements as a manager to keep Burnley in the First Division this season.”
