Some of the decisions he made were just farcical

Both sides were looking to bounce back from an opening day defeat so it was Baggies’ boss Gary Megson who was the happier of the two after the game,

"Judging by the way the game went I thought we deserved to win but whether we deserved to win by such a margin is debatable", said Megson. "Having said that I didn’t think the scoreline reflected the game the previous week at Walsall but when you have players playing against you like Paul Merson last week and in Burnley’s case Lee Hughes and Artim Sakiri today for us, it changes games.

"We don’t want to gain on the swings and lose on the roundabouts though. We are aware that we now have people in the middle of the park who can win matches for us – and in the rest of the side. But what we really do have to improve on is the defending from Koumas, Sakiri, Haas and Clement although they are good going forward.

"The goal we conceded was a shambles We had nobody on the ball and the shot wasn’t in the top corner like some of ours yet they scored. We switched off like we did at Walsall and we’ve got to become much better when we haven’t got possession."

Stan didn’t attend the after match press conference but spoke to Sky television after the game and also reflected on the scoreline.

"I think the scoreline was harsh but their first goal was a fantastic goal and we can have no complaints about that. Hulse got in front of Roche for the header on the second and the last two goals were just errors that we are trying to eliminate.

"I thought we should have had a penalty but the referee didn’t give it and of course those decisions change the course of games and frustrate players. But the referee makes his decisions and I think had it been at Turf Moor he would have given it and I think had it been for West Brom he would have given it.

"Then at the end he’s booked Paul Weller and not Johnson, it’s incredible. Some of the decisions he made were just farcical to be fair."
