Our players were terrific

A somewhat emotional Worthington spoke, clearly knowing that he wasn't going to be Norwich manager for much longer. “The players gave me the passion I was looking for but there were two soft goals in the first half which we were disappointed with,” he said. “Then we have a man sent off, become open and they got two more goals so all in all it was not a very good day.

“The whole occasion got to one or two players but they were professional and stuck at it which is a credit to them. They will have to fight on as will I, but I am proud of what I have done at this football club, I will stick by that and will stand tall and be professional.”

Shortly after his interview at the end of the game, Nigel Worthington was sacked as manager of Norwich City Football Club, a position he had held since December 2000 when he replaced Bryan Hamilton.

Clarets' boss Steve Cotterill, for once not being asked about West Brom, was delighted by the performance and result but didn't think it was the best we had played this season. “It's a good result, but we have played better than that this season and we are not going to put it down as our best performance,” he said.

“The scoreline is good, but that could have been better, it could have been eight today if we had taken all our chances and we are bitterly disappointed with the goal we conceded. It was a cheap goal and we are kicking ourselves for that. To be fair, we have done well away from home and we are very pleased with our performance today.

“Andy Gray is going to get all the plaudits but we must not look Gifton Noel-Williams' contribution. It is no coincidence that Andy is scoring more goals now the weight has been taken off him. Steve Jones was also very unselfish and it was just a great ream performance.”

Looking at results overall he added: “Even at home we have warranted better results and points against the likes of Wolves, Colchester and Southampton, but sometimes you get your results unexpectedly. People looking a this would probably have put Norwich down as a home win.

“I thought our players were terrific. They were strong in their energy, and they passed the ball well at times, and we are all just delighted. It makes for a nice trip home for all our supporters, and us of course.”
