Our eight central defensive partnership this season

It’s eleven games without defeat and Adams, after enthusing about the performance, said “It is a fantastic achievement for the boys, they are a great side and I couldn’t have asked for more.”

They have spent much of the season in the bottom half of the table and a Burnley win yesterday would have seen us back above them so surely they are not even considering the play offs. “We're not even thinking about the play-offs,” Adams added. “Our home form really has been the key but away from home we are lightweight. We need to find a formula to put that right.

"There is a lot to play for because there are a lot of contracts up and people are staking their claims to be part of what looks like a bright future for the club."

The performance and the result must have been difficult to accept for Steve Cotterill but he put a brave face on things after the game. “I thought we were gutsy, but we are obviously disappointed to lose the game,” he said. “The lads tried their best today with what we had available to us. We were missing two centre halves, a right-back and had a young man in midfield.

“I felt at stages we had a grip on the ball and once we got that grip on the ball the diagonal balls they wanted, to keep putting on James Scowcroft’s head because they knew he could beat Wade Elliott in the air, couldn’t happen.

“That was their weapon and the starting point for most of their attacks. I felt though that they gave their best today, but we just messed up with the goal.”

Talking about the situation in the centre of defence, Steve added, “It was something like our eight central defensive partnership this season. If you can’t stop goals then you are always putting yourself under major pressure to score them. We knew it was going to be tough back there today.

“I thought Michael Duff and Frank Sinclair were excellent for us and I thought Chris McCann, for a young man, played very well. Duff wants to play in the centre, but unfortunately for him he hasn’t played there because we’ve had John McGreal, Wayne Thomas and Frank Sinclair there previously.

“And he may have to play somewhere else next week which might be out of position for him, but we have got to look at all areas of the team and find out where the season might be catching up with us and certain individuals.”

The manager wasn’t happy with the performance he got from Michael Ricketts and said, “Michael Ricketts didn’t chase enough lost causes. He is fitter than when he first arrived and by the end of the season he will chase more otherwise he will be sitting next to me on the bench.”
