I've just spoken to him and he's pleased

Stan was at home ill whilst Gillingham player/boss Andy Hessenthaler had probably gone off to research ways of actually trying to win an away game.

So it was down to Wayne and Sam – Wayne Jones and Sam Ellis to talk us through the game with Jones not at all impressed with the way Gillingham had played.

"I thought we were the better side in the first half," Jones said. "We came off at half time and Andy and myself had a chat and thought that by bringing Rod Wallace on it would help us to get hold of the ball and bring more people into the game.

"Unfortunately when he did come on he missed a good chance before they scored and really couldn’t get into the game as well. That was disappointing because Rod is a class player.

"They put us under a little bit of pressure in the second half, but you have got to expect that from a home team. But I thought we coped with it very well.

"Jason Brown had the one save to make and it looked as thought if it was going to peter out into a 0-0 draw. In hindsight we would have grabbed that and taken it back on the coach with us."

On the goal he added: "From the touchline it looked like we all stood still and Glen Little looked on in amazement that he had actually got in there. That’s probably why he made such a poor contact and the ball went in under Jason Brown.

"We are disappointed with that and disappointed with the way we passed the ball, or lack of passed it today, because we were poor on the ball. I thought the quality of the pass up to the front today wasn’t as good as it normally is and our movement wasn’t good.

"All in all I thought we were poor on the ball but off the ball we worked hard, got a lot of tackles in and our shape matched theirs. I thought we were comfortable."

Sam, in charge in Stan’s absence, was pleased with the way things had gone with him in charge.

"We are pleased with that and we’re still unbeaten, that’s the main thing," said the assistant boss.

"We’ve won a few games in the cup but we are delighted with a league win. The players understandably feel it out there with the position they are in but they were confident today and it worked out for them. They had a few chances but it didn’t go in until Glen’s goal.

"It was difficult because the opposition are hard to beat and the conditions weren’t at all good, it was very blustery."

He had special praise for the goal stopper and the goal scorer.

"The keeper did very well and it was a match winning save from him. His missus had a baby on Wednesday so he’s happy at the moment.

"One goal in seven months isn’t bad. He’s been told about it but Glen tends to score in batches so watch out in the next few weeks [it is eleven months since Glen last scored]."

And finally about his gaffer: "The doctor said that if he came in he could spread it and we don’t want that. I’ve just spoken to him and he’s pleased with the result and the clean sheet, but hopefully he’ll be back next week."
