It's the same three points that were available against Arsenal

It's a policy that was adopted by Bryan Robson when he was manager of West Brom, resting his better players so they would be fresh for the 'winnable games' but McCarthy has had some heavy criticism this week although a number of managers have supported him.

McCarthy, speaking out about it, believes only one person has any right to criticise. He said: "The one person who has the right to bleat for me is Owen Coyle, but he has seen it was the right thing to do and said it.

"Owen was asked and common sense prevails from sensible people. But common sense is not very common when a furore starts. You can always find someone to utter something bad.

"For me Owen is a proper bloke. I know him well from playing in Scotland and he has come up through the school of hard knocks."

McCarthy continued: "I have 21 players and they are all entitled to play. I have got more integrity and honesty in my little finger than most of them that are accusing me.

"Whoever it is, I am not bothered. I go through the season and I complain not one jot about anybody. I try my best not to get involved in anyone else's politics or football club or anything like that and I am not going to get involved.

"It is laughable.

"I have had lots of messages of support, not because anyone thinks I need it because of the decisions that I made but because of some of the ridiculous, scathing and outrageous comments that have been about me and what I did. It must have been a slow news day for the last two days."

Looking forward to the game he added: "Let me tell you, I saw Burnley against Arsenal this week at Turf Moor and they played very well. Their home record has been absolutely fabulous too, they've had some great wins so that shows how tough they will be.

"They did well to come back from falling a goal behind against Arsenal. Arsenal started well and scored. They could have then been two or three up but Burnley played well. When they got the equaliser they had ten men back in their half.

"But they can play and they've got good players. No one should be in any doubt about that. They have been really excellent this season.

"It should be a good contest because both teams came out of the Championship, both are learning their trade and there are only three points between us.

"It could well be whichever team gets off to the best start ending up with the positive result. What is important is that we start the game well like we did against Bolton and Tottenham when we went on to win the game.

"It seems to be in the Premier League that the team that scores first does go on to win the game or at least not lose."

Much has been said about Burnley's away form and Owen Coyle has told his players to kill it off once and for all.

"If people want to ask questions about our away form they are well within their rights to do so," he said. "The only people who can put that right are us.

"We are the ones who can rectify all the talk about our away form, but to do that we need to go and compete and play well and if we do, then we'll put it to bed.

"The games come thick and fast and come Sunday we have to make sure we are at our maximum, as we were against Arsenal. If we can replicate that performance, it will end up in us getting points."

He added: "Every game is a massive game, home or away, for this football club. I think people always look at these games as proverbial six pointers but when all's said and done it's the same three points that were available against Arsenal on Wednesday night.

"We have to try and get to that level of performance again and if we do that we have shown we can earn points in this league.

"We are under no illusions how difficult a game this will be. Wolves are a good side as they showed prior to the Man United result by going to Tottenham and winning that match, when you know the form they are in at White Hart Lane.

"That speaks volumes for what they offered to that match and they beat Bolton at home before that. They have been buoyed by those two big results but we have to concentrate on what we can do and if we get to our best as a group we know we can win a game."
