It's certainly not crisis time defensively

Palace boss Dougie Freedman will be hoping to make it a perfect week on the back of two away wins at Bolton, last Saturday, and Wolves in midweek that have taken his side to just below the play off places.

Ahead of the game he was asked about Burnley's goalscoring and said: "When you go out and spend a couple of million pounds on Charlie Austin who's a proven goalscorer you are always going to have that thought process and the boy Paterson as well up front. They spent money on him in the Premiership so they've definitely got attacking options.

"We played Burnley a few years ago when I'd taken over and I thought the difference in quality was huge. They had a strong team and we'd done well to only be beat 1-0 but 18 months later we've come a long way and I think we will be a match not only for Burnley but for most teams in this division so if I am going to measure myself up against Burnley from the last 18 months I think we've come a long way. We can now honestly say it is going to be a difficult match but a match we can take something from."

Freedman then had it put to him that Burnley can be overrun in the midfield because of playing two orthodox wingers, but he was quick to question that. "I love your observation of Burnley but I think it's wrong," he said.

"I saw Burnley playing three weeks ago when they played with a diamond so they have got it in their team to change and I believe you've got to be ready for that change and prepared for that change.

"They are a very good team on their day but we feel that if we can get our game plan right and out tactical knowledge onto the field then we've got people in our team that can win the match and people that can defend very well so I would be looking at Burnley and think to myself that they can come up with one or two plans and we've got to be ready for them."

Clarets' manager Eddie Howe said a week ago that we were going into a big week in our season, but things haven't quite worked out as planned with only two points from the two home games against struggling clubs Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday.

We've conceded too many goals but Howe spoke in defence of the defence. “We have good defenders and I don’t think it will be long before we return to looking really solid," he said.

“I don’t feel we are far away and Jason (Shackell) will make a difference to that. We have missed him in the last two games and with him in the side we are tighter. We’ll have to see how he is this weekend and he will be close, but if he’s not fit he will definitely be back for Blackpool.”

He continued: “We have recognised we haven’t been good enough defensively this year, as a whole, but we feel we are not far away as a team. There were some really positive spells in Tuesday’s game again and in the first half some of our play was excellent.

"I don’t think there is a great deal wrong and it’s certainly not crisis time defensively. Yes, we had poor second halves against Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday, but in the whole I think we have defended ok this year.

“Set plays were our big problem and we seem to have rectified that. It’s just tweaks because if we had won 3-2 everyone would have been saying what a great performance it was. For the two goals there were 15 passes in each and both started from the goalkeeper, all the way through the pitch, which is something we work on every day.

“We certainly have a team that cares and wants to do well and when you have that you know you have a chance. We are three unbeaten and we have to remember that.

“The last two draws may have felt like defeats, but they are points on the board and we were looking for a consistent run of unbeaten games, so hopefully we can extended that at Palace.

"They have had two fantastic away wins and it goes to show how difficult and unpredictable this league is. They have fantastic pace, especially out wide and Selhurst Park is a difficult place to go, but we are confident we can go there on the back of the Derby game and two games unbeaten at home in confident mood.”
