It's added to the grey hairs I've got

Before reading Parkinson's comments it might be worth noting that here is a manager who has clearly got to grips with Championship football in the hot seat. He's managed both Hull and Charlton at this level and has the remarkable record of 5 wins, 8 draws and 20 defeats from 33 games. So he obviously knows what he's talking about, probably his words are as thoughtful and entertaining as his team's football.

Parkinson though hasn't got to grips with stoppage time and maybe he needs to be informed that time is added on for goals, substitutions and injuries and should be added on for blatant time wasting. He might also note that we scored in the FOURTH minute of stoppage time.

"It's a joke where the referee got six minutes from. I just don't understand it at all," the bemused Parkinson said after the game. "Of course there were one or two injuries and the substitutions, but I think the referee got sucked in by the crowd and there was no way it was six minutes. It's unusual to see six minutes in any game. I expected to see four, but six today was a joke and it has cost us."

Hopefully someone will have explained it all to him by now. But he then spoke about his team and their performance. "We've lost two centre backs and had to throw two new ones in after just one training session. I thought Darren Ward and Matty Holland did tremendously well for us," he added.

"We knew we would come under a bit of pressure in the second half, which we expected with the home team 1-0 down. Those two were rock sold along with the goalkeeper. And one or two moments where we didn't work hard enough to stop crosses into the box has cost us.

"I've sat here a few times this season when I've been very, very down in terms of the manner of the performance but today I can't say that. The spirit and commitment of the lads was superb and they deserved more out of it.

"We've got to do better in those situations. As much as they showed resilience and commitment, it's got to be right down to the wire. We got that in abundance today and have got to keep putting in performances like that.

"There were a lot of encouraging signs from the boys. There are lots of positives today and if we keep performing in the manner like that then we will have a good chance."

When asked if he thought six minutes was correct regarding the stoppage time, Burnley boss Owen Coyle commented, "I thought it might have been sixteen minutes added, not six." He then added: "But it was probably fitting that we scored the winner in and among those six minutes.

"I would have liked it to have been a wee bit earlier because it's added to the grey hairs I've got. But the lads had real desire, courage and bravery to keep passing the ball. I think there were three other efforts cleared off the line and their keeper has made a couple of magnificent saves, so there's no doubt it was a just result.

"We dominated the game, as we have done in the recent past in the Championship games. We lost a goal to their one and only attack in the half and it would have been easy to feel sorry for ourselves.

"But I told them to show the character and sprit we've talked about at this football club, make sure it was in evidence in the second half and believe in what we're doing.

"I think there's always a tendency when you go behind to change your principles and start launching big balls into the box, but we still kept trying to pass it on what I felt was a tricky pitch, and we created chances again.

"There was probably a spell where you think this isn't going to go in, no matter what we do, but we stuck to our guns and Steven Thompson has popped up with a great finish. I thought it was a great move when all's said and done and then to score the winner was just."

The manager praised his two substitutes Kevin McDonald and Thompson as well as the performance of debutant Rhys Williams then added: "It's a great three points and it elevates us up the league a bit and takes us two points from the play offs.

"Given that it was our fortieth game of the season, to have had the run we've had in the Carling Cup, to still be in the FA Cup and then put yourself back in the mix at the top end of the league, that's all credit to that group of players.

"Coming back off the run of results we've had in the league it would have been easy to feel this wasn't our day, but they showed absolute character to win that match."
