It's about Burnley Football club, our team, our performance

Berg replaced the previously popular Steve Kean on 31st October, a day after Dyche was unveiled as the new Burnley boss. For Dyche this game is a new experience but no so for Berg who was with Blackburn when the two clubs last met at this level twelve seasons ago.

He knows all about this one and when asked if his team will be asked to silence the home crowd he joked: "You’ll do well to silence the crowd in this one, that will be very difficult.

Speaking about his appearance for them at Turf Moor in December 2000, he added: “I remember the first game up there was quite a tight game. I think Jason McAteer scored the first goal and then Sparky (Mark Hughes) missed a sitter from one yard, but we won the game so we’re not going to worry about that.

“I think we were quite solid on the day, we got the goals and it was a great game to be involved in. That was the first time in 17 years that we played them and the atmosphere and the intensity was fantastic. We got into the ground, it was an hour before kick-off and it was a full house, everybody was jumping up and down and making themselves heard.

“They are fantastic games to be involved in. I was an experienced player when I was involved the first time and I really cherish that, especially that we won as well. Everyone was happy afterwards.

“I hope that the players are looking forward to the game and that they cherish the opportunity to be involved in a game that so many people feel so much about. I know for me when I look back at the big games I played, these games are the ones that stick out. I played in some good games over the years, but I never forget these games.”

He added:  “History is one thing but we have to make sure it happens on the day of the game. Of course we are happy with that record but sometimes it is difficult to explain why some clubs have certain records against other teams, it isn’t always logical.

“We are happy about it but at the same time what will decide this result is what is going to happen during this game. I’m the same now as when I was a player in terms of making sure that mentally we are right for this game.

“Yes, we should cherish this, but at the same time when the game starts we have to focus on the football. If you start thinking about the crowd and everything else when you play football, you’re not going to play football well, are you?

“They are fantastic games and we are really happy that people have that passion for the clubs and for the football. The tradition in this country with the two clubs, the history that goes back so far and the passion for the football clubs in this area, all those things I have seen in these derby games.

“We just have to make sure that we do the right things when we play the game, that the focus is right and we make sure we handle it the right way.”

Dyche is deflecting the pressure away from the Clarets ahead of his first Lancashire derby. “The expectation is on them at the moment, but when you are an underdog you know what can happen,” he said.

“I have been an underdog many times and come out of it on top. We believe in what we are doing here and we believe at home in a big game like this we can perform to win the game and that’s the main thing, to perform and win a football match.

“In the layman’s eyes Blackburn might look like the bigger concern because of where they just come from and they have got some good players, and that has to be recognised.

“You look at Blackburn who have just come out of the Premier League with, I would say, quite a large budget for the playing staff and the way they go about their business, but that goes out of the window. It’s about Burnley Football Club, about our team and about our performance.”

He continued: “It’s a great game and something to look forward to for the fans the players. A full house at the Turf will make it a great feel and it’s what derby games are all about.

“It adds that extra spice and it is different. There’s no two ways about it. It will have a different feel and that’s a great thing as a player and as a staff to be involved in.

“We are both in similar positions in the table. There’s not a lot between the two. They have had a couple of indifferent results. We have had a couple of nice results, particularly away from home, taking four points from two games.

“So we are in good shape and that’s what we are really concentrating on, ourselves. We go into with a good mentality and a nice solid confidence to what we are doing. We will be dominating in the ground in the stands with the vocal support and we want to dominate on the pitch as well.”
