It's a huge learning curve for us all

For Roy Hodgson though it was two less than he thought his side deserved, particularly after they way they'd played in the first hour of the game up to our equaliser.

"We had two great chances early on and got behind them well," he said. "I thought at half time we'd actually played very well in the first half and we were a little bit unlucky to come in at nil-nil.

"I thought when we took the lead it might be enough because we'd been very comfortable defending up to that point but they threw a few more players forward and scored a very good equaliser.

"Still, I think we can consider ourselves a little bit unlucky not to get all three points because we did have one or two good chances. I think with a bit of luck and generosity on behalf of the referee we'd have got at least one penalty in the game.

"There's a tinge of regret because I thought there was a good chance of us getting three points and I thought the performance merited the three points."

Owen Coyle admitted he had some big choices to make ahead of the game with captain Steven Caldwell back after suspension and David Nugent returning to the squad.

Coyle said: "I decided to go back to the team that did so well against Aston Villa here last time, but Kevin McDonald and David Nugent are knocking down the door to start games and those are the problems I want to have.

"Both will be disappointed not to start games. Every week I have a dilemma of picking a team and I want that. I don't want a case where five or six don't deserve it.

"I want 15 or 16 to feel they should be in that starting 11 and Kevin McDonald did very little wrong last week. I told him he was unfortunate not to start and David Nugent, if he was available, would probably have started at Portsmouth because of the way we wanted to shape up for that game."

Looking at the draw against Fulham he said: "As it was, it was a hard earned point and we had to do it the hard way. I thought Fulham started well and eventually we got to grips. I was quite happy at half time, but then from a free kick we lost a poor goal. The skipper knows a poor decision was made, but that was his only mistake of the day.

"It would have been easy then to get disappointed. In the last two away games we have not got the first goal, but I can't ask any more from these players and they picked themselves up off the floor and on another day we might have won it.

"I think a draw was a fair reflection, but at one each I felt we were the aggressors and had the belief we could win the game.

"Ultimately it could turn out to be a very valuable point. Every single point is hard earned at this level, you can tell that from the grey hairs on my head. But it's a huge learning curve for us all.

"We will continue to go and be positive and if we make mistakes we will do that trying to win games."
