It was naïve at best and I have let the players know that

Dave Jones saw his Cardiff side go on to win after the Clarets had equalised with just six minutes to go and said: "It was a very tight affair. I think the last twenty minutes it opened right up for some reason. Probably it was down to tired legs from two games in three days. Once it opened up we capitalised on it really well.

"Talking to the boys at half time it was always going to be tight and it was hard in the middle of the park where they'd set up and we found it difficult to find any free flowing and they found it difficult because we were closing down as much as we could.

"Then there were a flurry of goals and both sets of fans as well as the people on the bench went through all the emotions there are because we got our noses in front and then a mistake from Darren Purse let them in.

"Full credit to them but we went straight up the other end and got the goal. They've gone from elation to what is happening. Then the third one for Ross was top, top drawer and it just killed the game totally.

"Every fan, it was a packed house today with not a seat in the place that anyone could get, they should all go home very happy apart from the Burnley fans.

"It was a hard battle against a very good side. The way they set up is very difficult to break down and they've got good players. They caused us problems as much as we caused them. That's the sign of a good team.

"Full credit to both sets of players because there was only one change from the games on Saturday and that was Purse for Roger Johnson and to go at full pelt like that says a lot for both sets of players. They are fit, they are strong and it was only the last ten or fifteen minutes of the game that it really opened up."

Although Owen Coyle remains happy with our position in the league he wasn't very happy with the way we defended in this game.

"We are in the same position we were in before the Bank Holiday and if somebody had said to me at the start of the season we would be four points clear, then we would have taken that," Coyle said.

"We have to concentrate on what we can do and if we do that, it will serve us well. I think what you do recognise in this league is that you cannot switch off for a second and I am disappointed in the manner of the goals we lost today.

"We controlled the game for large periods and looked very comfortable. We restricted them to very few opportunities, but the first one was basic defending from a throw in, even though their lad has put in a top quality finish.

"We got back in with an equaliser and straight from the kick off we have switched off again from a long ball put through. It was naïve at best and I have let the players know that. I don't know if it was two games in two days, but the concentration levels have to be at the maximum at this level.

"They are a good side but we have more than matched them so there was a lot to be pleased about, but I am just disappointed by the goals to be honest so we will dust ourselves down and look to bounce back quickly."

Coyle went on to explain the absence from the squad of striker Martin Paterson. He said: "Martin was struggling on Saturday and that is why he was sat on the bench. Young Jay did well again, although he tired which was to be expected after only his second start. Two games in two days was a big ask of him, but there is no doubt he is going to be a top player for years to come.

"Every team up and down the country gets blighted by injury and we are no different. We have used the fewest number of players in the Championship and played the most games, but it doesn't faze me. We will just get on with the challenge in front of us."
