It was courage and bravery to push on

"It's two points lost, but I can't have everything," Jones said after seeing his former striker Steven Thompson score the Clarets equaliser.

"We played some superb football and should have wrapped the game up, but they are no mugs. We caused them problems all night but we are disappointed we did not see out the whole game.

"We had enough chances in the second half to have won the game. We have got pace and that will cause teams problems."

Owen Coyle praised Thompson's contribution after the game. He said: "Steven had a great impact when he came on. It was a difficult decision to leave him out because he did so well on Saturday.

"But with Clarke Carlisle coming back it allowed us to get our players back in the right positions and unfortunately, he was the one who missed out. It's particularly hard too against his former club, but he has showed he has a big, big part to play at this club.

"He led the line magnificently, scored one and could have had another and I thought he gave us a fresh impetus when he came on."

Coyle was quick to admit that Cardiff were the better side on the night. "I think when you analyse the game, I am obviously delighted to get a point out of it from 2-1 down.

"I actually thought we scored against the run of play in the first half. Cardiff looked a very good side and we certainly never got to the standards we have set before. We are at our best when we have loads of energy and although the effort was there, we were missing the spark tonight.

"Maybe it's just been a game too far. It's been a hectic spell for the lads and it would have been very easy at 2-1 down to feel sorry for ourselves. But this group just do not know when they are beaten.

"We could even have won it at the end, although that would have been harsh on Cardiff. They have some very good players, but I have nothing but praise for my own group because although we haven't played as we can, it was courage and bravery to push on."
