It was a very good win in very tough circumstances

That goal was the first Charlton had conceded under Riga in his fourth game in charge and he's certainly right in that once it had been scored the result was never in any doubt, although I do think some of his words are over flattering to his team's performance.

He said: "We knew before the game that this team (Burnley) is maybe the most efficient in the Championship. They don't need a lot of chances to score and they defend very well.

"Of course, we were looking to create chances and be organised. We had maybe the first two chances, not big ones, but enough to score but it didn't happen. Then on their first or second chance they scored. That was the big difference.

"They became smarter and it was more difficult because they didn't play on Tuesday. So it became more and more difficult during the game, but I am sure the result of 3-0 is not what we saw during the game. We knew that it would be difficult but we could have seen another game had we scored first."

He added: "A defeat is a defeat. I would prefer one 3-0 that three 1-0s, but it is clear also that we were quite unlucky at some moments in the game, but you have to keep the luck and put it on your side, not wait for it.

"We won't always win the games or be consistent all the time. It is about efficiency. We are looking forward and looking for solutions.

"The next game will be difficult (away at Forest), but I am sure we can find the satisfaction that we found in the first three games.

"We must be clever in the way that we manage the players. We have played four difficult games, four consistent games, with a midfield of very young guys and also players who are used to it. So with the rotation, we must be clever."

Clarets boss Dyche saw his only money signing Ashley Barnes open the scoring with his first Burnley goal; saw his latest signing Chris Baird settle in and his substitute Michael Kightly grab the late third.

It all went to plan for him on a pitch that was hardly suitable for football. He said: "It was a very good win in very tough circumstances. Charlton have just had a couple of results, particularly the one Tuesday (against Bournemouth) and the surface is arguably the worst I've seen in a long, long time.

"I thought they handled the pitch better than we did for the first 15-20 minutes, but they are used to it. I thought Charlton started very brightly, without really affecting our box as regards to scoring opportunities.

"We then began to grow into the game, get in some productive areas and then a real fine cross and a good finish from Barnes changed the feel of the game from there on in really."

Barnes looked pleased with the goal and so did his manager. "I'm delighted for him," Dyche added. "He's worked very hard, had to wait and be patient and he's gone and nicked himself a goal. He could have had a second. I must say it was a fantastic save from their keeper."

The manager had words for his newest recruit too, a player he'd played alongside in the Watford defence exactly ten years ago, and the part he played in keeping a clean sheet. "Chris is a very intelligent player," Dyche enthused. "He knows the game and there's a calmness about what he does, and that comes from playing at the top level of course.

"There's great value in that (keeping a clean sheet) and the team have great value in that. Tom was delighted right at the end there, and rightly so. All the defenders value that as well as we do."

The game was played to non-stop support from the travelling Burnley fans. Dyche said of them: "I thought they were fantastic today. They are enjoying the journey that we are on and they've always been really positive.

"They came down here last year in their numbers when it was an awkward spell for us. We got a nice 1-0 victory that day and I remember the support they gave us then, and it was the same again today."
