It was a stupid goal to give away

Pardew had seen his up and down West Ham side win their second game of the week in the North West having won at Wigan on Saturday although with the other results they were still one place and a couple of points outside the play offs.

“We’re absolutely delighted with the Burnley result,” he said. “It was always going to be a very tough place to come, and after winning at Wigan on Saturday we knew that it was important not to slip up.

“I think we showed tremendous battling qualities. Burnley have got a terrific defensive record and they were never going to give a lot away, but we stayed patient and got the winner in the end.

“You can see that there’s a real good spirit around the side now and that’s going to be crucial in the run-in.

“We had some really good performances. The two young guys at the back did really well for us. They both had solid games at Burnley when they came under plenty of pressure and I was really impressed by them.

“And at the other end of the pitch, I don’t think I’ve ever seen our front two working so well together. Teddy and Marlon looked really dangerous and although Teddy got the goal Marlon did really well to set it up.

“Some of our link play was top-class and we’re going to need those two at their best for the rest of the run-in.”

Steve Cotterill was not so happy with either the result or the performance and said, “It was a very disappointing way to lose and I didn’t actually see the goal, I was talking to Michael Duff at the time. The last time I saw it Danny Coyne had it in his hands and the next I saw it, it was in the back of the net.

“It was a stupid goal to give away because there wasn’t a goal in the game and it had 0-0 written all over it. Without us playing well, it should have been a draw and that would have been a good result for us.

“We would have liked to have won, but we didn’t do enough tonight and had too many players below par in my opinion, and that doesn’t go with the team performance we got on Saturday. We have got to be better next Saturday because we shot ourselves in the foot tonight.

“It has cost us another point because if we’d won we could have gone up to about eleventh. It was disappointing for us all round after Saturday.”

Asked about the return of Danny Coyne in goal he said, “I told them before Saturday that I was going to alternate the pair of them between now and the end of the season and they would have another four games each. They have both had long periods where they’ve been sat on the bench this season, Brian early on and Danny later on.

“I don’t think there is a lot to choose between them as they’ve been at the moment and we can have a look at things and keep them ticking over and on their toes.”

John Oster, whose short back pass led to the goal, was substituted immediately afterwards but this was not because of the goal. “It was a change we had planned,” said Cotterill. “I didn’t take John off because of the goal. I wouldn’t do that to someone.”

Looking back at the season, and saying that the play offs would be very unlikely now he ended by saying, “It has always been in the hands of others but whether we can or we can’t make the play offs, we are talking about a team that has gone from 19th and being potentially bankrupt, to a team that had the cup runs we’ve had, to being where we are in the league now and to talking about the play offs. Maybe it’s too much to talk about all that in one breath.”
