It was a great team effort

It was the first of three games whilst the Clarets are away and he admitted they were progressing well through pre-season.

"It has been a very good workout," he said after the game. "The conditions here meant it was always going to be very tough and the humidity has been incredible over the past couple of days.

"But I thought, after the first 10 or 15 minutes, when we were getting used to the heat and intensity, we saw some very good football today. The progression we have been making over the past three games has been very good and it's rewarding to see the players score five goals.

"They put a great shift in and, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter who you play against, to put the ball in the back of the net is a very tough task. We passed the ball, moved it well and scored some great goals and hopefully the games will get progressively harder and give us sterner tests."

Speaking on having to keep an eye on the players in the conditions, he added: "I know Graham Alexander lost six points in weight yesterday on fluids alone and I am sure there will be a lot of fluid loss collectively.

"We made changes for that reason, but everyone played their part and the quality of the goals in particular was terrific. It was great to see Chris Iwelumo score his first goal and there were some very good performances all over the pitch.

"Wade Elliott was very industrious, Dean Marney did well and Steven Thompson scored again, so all in all it was a great team effort and we are delighted."

There was one concern for Burnley fans as they waited for news on the game, the injury sustained by Chris McCann that forced him off during the first half. Thankfully, Laws was able to put everyone's minds at rest on that one.

"He has had a clash of knees and just numbed the side of his knee a little bit," he explained. "The physio assures me there is nothing to worry about, his knee has been iced down and he should be ok.

"We are all concerned when a player goes down, especially Chris McCann after the trouble had had last year with his knee and we don't want that to happen again. Chris has had a fantastic pre-season, he has worked so hard and nobody is concerned about the injury."
