It seems to be a bit of a Judas month

Wayne Thomas and Micah Hyde were the Burnley players to come off injured but three Reading players, Nicky Shorey, Steve Sidwell and Dave Kitson are also expected to be out for some weeks with two of them being forced off.

The managers were both concerned about their players and spoke about it after the game with Steve Coppell pleased that he had finally overcome the Clarets after two draws last season.

“It was always going to be a tough task against Burnley, having drawn with them twice last season we knew it would be tough to break them down,” Coppell said after seeing his side beat us 2-1.

“After we got the breakthrough I did think we could relax a little but it was almost as if we were content and they came more into it the longer the first half wore on. I think Steve Sidwell’s injury affected us but one each at half time was a fair reflection of the first half.”

With Shroey and Kitson off the field by the start of the second half Coppell continued, “Every two minutes I was looking to bring Sidwell off and I spoke with him but somehow he got his way through the full game. It shows his quality and it was a terrific display of guts.”

He say Kevin Doyle score his first goal for the club and added, “His goal was an exact replica of the earlier chance that he missed, just from the other side. Kevin is delighted and I thought he gave us an injection of mobility that we had been lacking. He is so strong and can go right across the field putting defenders under pressure.

“I’ve had no doubts at all from day one about the quality of our forwards. Kevin has come from nowhere and he just looks a player. Leroy Lita just scores goals, and with Kitson as well, all of a sudden we have got great combinations available.”

Coppell concluded, “In the last couple of games we’ve got four points but the lads feel they have not delivered a performance. That is going to be the key so we’ve still got a lot to do.”

Steve Cotterill was upset about the result and very much concerned for Wayne Thomas when he spoke after the game and it was about Thomas he spoke first.

“The problem was when Glen Little fell over the ball and landed on Wayne for which they got a free kick. If the scan shows what we think it might show, Wayne Thomas probably won’t play again this season. If it is what we think, it is a cruciate ligament injury.”

With Micah Hyde also forced off with a hamstring injury Cotterill added, “That probably sums up what is happening with us at the moment and it is pretty frustrating. To add to that I thought we were better than Reading and they had to match us.

“We were the better team, certainly in the first half and in the second half they came into it but there is no way we deserved to be coming away from this game with nothing. I thought the boys were excellent and although we have a few gripes, we’ll keep them in the dressing room.

“The least we should have come away with was a point, but whatever we do at the moment, it seems to be a bit of a Judas month. We are paying a heavy price for things and we don’t know why. We have played better than the results have suggested and we’ve come here and had more of the ball in the first half than we had in ninety minutes here last season.

“We’ve got a few days now to go away and lick our wounds a little bit and we’ll come back fighting in September.”

Cotterill ended by admitting that there were no complaints over the sending off of Garreth O’Connor. “He had a swipe at the lad to be honest and I don’t think we have too many gripes about that. Their dug out reacted very quickly as did the referee.”
