It is very frustrating because we had played well

Stan had it about right but it does take some believing that Reading boss Steve Coppell actually really did think his side were worthy of anything other than a defeat.

"At the end of 90 minutes and without the benefit of watching the game on video yet I would say a draw was probably fair," said Coppell immediately after the game.

"At half time I thought it could go either way and neither side got into a flow. When we hit the bar through Lloyd Owusu late on I thought that was it but credit to the players. In two games we’ve got four points but to please the home fans we would have liked the results to come the other way round.

"We lost the thread after they scored their second goal and that’s happened before. I can’t explain it and we’ve talked about trying to stay calm when we go behind. I think it happened a lot last season as well and only two or three times did we come from behind to win.

"We got jittery and the crowd were having a go at me because of our long ball game. It is a natural reaction to pressing more although I encourage variety. There’s a time for the long ball and we need to be more inventive."

He spoke of the problems Glen Little gave them. "They played some little triangles with Glen Little, we got frustrated then gave it away so it was a vicious circle and we needed to break it."

And having a little dig at the Madejski crowd he added, "We have faith when sometimes our own fans don’t but we have to believe in ourselves and we’re at the stage of the season where it matters. Sometimes hearts win you as many points as heads and ability."

Stan thought we should have won the game and was as frustrated as the travelling Burnley supporters at the final whistle.

"I’m very disappointed not to have won in the end," he said. "I thought we did enough to have won the game.

"We looked comfortable and it is very frustrating because we had played well and played some nice football. We played it deep and hit them on the break.

"It really was a poor goal to give away in the first half but we then scored two good goals and we are disappointed. But we haven’t lost the game so hopefully now we can go to Millwall and do better there than we did last time in the cup tie."

He also confirmed that Richard Chaplow was taken off merely as a precaution because of the fact that we are without both Tony Grant and Paul Weller on Saturday through suspension.

"Chappy took a whack on his thigh and we took him off because we need him for Saturday. We’ll see how it is."
