"The first goal was terrific, how it was conceived and finished. We had a bit of luck with the second but you earn that luck. It was Micky Gray's enthusiasm that gave him the opportunity to score.
"Burnley are one of our competitors for a play off spot and taking three points off them makes a big difference. I hope it sends out a message that we are still involved but we now have got to go and do it again on Tuesday. We've done it away from home and now we've got to do it at Molineux."
McCarthy had words of praise for midfielder Seyi Olofinjana. "He came back from the African Nations Cup not playing the way he or I would have liked. He was left out but came back and did well."
They were definitely mistakes as far as Owen Coyle was concerned. "Disappointment is an understatement. That is nowhere near what we are looking for," the manager said after the game.
"We started the game well enough, but we have handed Wolves the game. If you analyse the goals, each one is worse than the last. Individual mistakes have cost us and if we though the first was bad enough, the second is a bad back pass and Gabor then kicks it off the onrushing player.
"At 2-0 we had a mountain to climb and we knew we needed to start the second half well. But the third goal went from bad to worse and it doesn't need me to comment because anyone who saw it will know it is a huge error. We did finally get the goal back and it would have been interesting if we had got a second. As it was, it never came and goals change games."
Coyle admitted he would analyse the game again. "I will sit and put myself through the game again on Sunday and I am sure I'll find that we had more attempts at goal, more crosses, corners and possession.
"But goals change games and it is schoolboy stuff. I can take it when someone scores a good goal against us, but not when you are handing people gifts. We have been doing that consistently and it is something we have to eradicate from our game and quickly. Mental strength is a big thing in football and we need people to stand up and be counted. We never had enough of those today and Wolves will be delighted.
"I think we are still only three points off the play offs so we will lick our wounds, come in Monday and regroup. A derby with Preston probably couldn't be a better game. We have an opportunity to address what has happened and if we can stop gifting goals we could still have a terrific end to the season."
