He had probably agreed to take on the task of counting the crowd having seen Burnley lose a game after being in front for the first time in 27 months.

Instead Sam Ellis took centre stage to give his views on the proceedings at Selhurst Park,

"I thought we acquitted ourselves quite well and we did have a few chances that could have gone in along with a few penalty appeals.

"We felt at half time that if we carried on playing the way we had been then we could go on to win the game but we were a bit unfortunate.

"It wasn’t a good way to end the season but we do hope to put that right next season. It has been a good season though apart from the last third and we will now look forward to next season."

Sam then went on to talk about those players who had played despite the fact that the club had released them earlier in the week.

"They are great professionals and they have been throughout the time they have been at the club."
