It could have been a tricky game for us

Dario G had said on Friday that his side would attack but would be vulnerable at the back, he certainly got one half of that right as the Clarets scored three goals in a game for the first time since February.

The Crewe boss was disappointed with the way his side conceded the goals and pointed to the first crucial early goal as one that could have been avoided. “We had worked on the corner during the week and Neil Sorvel should have been in that position,” he said.

“It was disappointing to concede another goal from a corner and we will have to deal with that. We have got a soft belly and we aren’t dealing with those things with any real assurance.

“The third goal was the real killer and we didn’t play with any real quality and you never thought that our forwards would give their defence any real problems.

“Their forwards on the other hand caused many more problems for us even though we perhaps had the best of the midfield. However, we were found wanting in both penalty areas.

“Frank Sinclair is only 5ft 10ins but he won every header. We haven’t got that kind of centre half and we know that it is a problem and one that we have got to solve one way or another.

“We thought Steve Jones would cause some problems for Duff, but he didn’t, whilst Like Varney did well when he came on and you have to say that Michael Higdon did better with the ball than Dean Ashton when he came on.”

Steve Cotterill was a happy man at the end. “I’m delighted with that,” he enthused. “It’s our first home win of the season and is one for the fans.

“There were some terrific performances throughout the team today in what could have been a tricky game for us. It was nice to keep a clean sheet and Danny made a couple of decent saves at an important stage of the game.

“I did think we looked tired in the last twenty minutes so whether the break did us good or not I don’t know, but we’ve won so it might have done.”

He was pleased with the quality of the goals. “For the first it was a great ball in and a good flick on, Robbie drifted in there for the second whilst the third was a good goal too.

“I thought Ian Moore was outstanding today too. He worked hard throughout and he’ll get a goal sooner of later.”
