I'm delighted with the boys

Southampton had turned in two disappointing performances recently against promotion candidates Watford and Sheffield United but manager George Burley was delighted with the character his side showed.

“I was more pleased with the performance than the result,” he said after he saw his side inch a further point away from Millwall and the bottom three positions. “The commitment was total and it has to be like that from now until the end of the season.

“We have a lot to play for. We have six very tough games remaining but if we show the same commitment and spirit as we did tonight then we will be OK.

“That commitment was certainly there tonight which was very pleasing. We worked extremely hard in very tricky conditions. The pitch was soggy and it was wet and windy but it was right to play it. It was not ideal but it was playable and the conditions were the same for both sides.”

Burley saw his side take an early lead before the Clarets fought back to equalise and he added, “We started very brightly and got our noses in front and we played some decent football considering the conditions. We had a few chances after they equalised and if we had scored one of them then I think we would have won the game.

“We had to battle in the second half but after being outfought at Sheffield United I was pleased with the spirit we showed. This was a game where we had to fight to match them. We showed the commitment and determination we will need in order to keep us above that bottom three and we have to keep going.”

Steve Cotterill saw his side pick up their fourth point from two home games and felt that we deserved to have won the game. “I think we deserved three points tonight,” he said after the game. “Our second half performance was very good and Miller pulled off two excellent saves from Jon Harley and Chris McCann and I think Alan Mahon's shot, had it been six inches lower, would have beaten any goalkeeper. If Southampton had scored in the second half, I felt it would have been on a break.”

We fell behind to a first minute own goal from Phil Bardsley and Steve was quick to speak about his loan defender. “It's amazing because Phil diidn't put a foot wrong on Friday night and not even forty seconds into this game and that happens. To be fair to him, when the cross is coming in, he's just got the wrong way round and it looks as though he's kicked it into the net, but I've just seen it again and I think it has been kicked onto him.

“I felt he carried that with him for the rest of the first half and we needed to get him in at half time. He showed great character to come out in the second half and play a big part in the game.”

Having gone behind so early, the Clarets were quick to respond with Andy Gray's second goal in two games. “I think he might have gone the difficult way round,” the manager said. “But having said that, if he does that every week, he can go whichever way around the roundabout he likes.

“We're not just pleased with Andy's goals though, we're pleased with his whole contribution because he's a good lad and hasn't played a lot of football since Boxing Day, so he's equipped himself well.”

He was pleased with the whole side though and added, “I'm delighted with the boys because they showed great character. When you go behind like that you can easily go, and I saw Southampton on Saturday and they could have been two goals up but ended losing 3-0, so that could have easily happened to us.

“There's only a tinge of disappointment tonight though, because I felt we did enough to deserve the win.”
