I thought we were truly outstanding in the first half

O'Neill had seen his side behind for most of the game but after that late Emile Heskey equaliser he said: "I think from our second half performance we deserved it.

"We were stodgy in the first half and we had no reason to be. We were coming off the back of a great win and confidence was very high. But I know confidence is high around Turf Moor at the moment because of their performances, particularly at home.

"I thought that Burnley adjusted to the conditions in the first half better than we did. They got the goal, not the best goal from our viewpoint, and it knocked us back a little bit. We just didn't get going at all until the second half. But overall, I felt the point was well merited.

Burnley had led from an early Steven Caldwell header and turned in a memorable first half performance. "I thought we were truly outstanding in the first half," said Coyle. "We passed and moved the ball and created numerous opportunities and scored a good goal.

"I felt we were very much in control of the game, but you can feel that in a Premier League game and quickly things can change. We always knew they were going to come at us in the second half and Brian had a great save from Agbonlahor.

"Outside that I don't remember them having too many opportunities but we have paid the price for not clearing a corner properly and not dealing with it when it came back in. But I can't ask any more of my players. They have worked their socks off and, within that, shown real quality.

"I thought Brad Friedel was outstanding today and on another day it would have resulted in a few more goals.

"But if you had told me two years ago, when I came here, that we would play Aston Villa and be disappointed not to win, I would have done cartwheels. Three points would have been great, but as it is we take the one and look to move on and this might turn out to be a very important point."
