I thought there were maybe three pass marks within the team

Laws had started last season with six successive defeats before they got their first points of the season in late September but this time he saw his side go two up in the first four minutes of the game before completing a 4-1 win, the biggest of the day in the Championship.

"What a great start," he said. "It was almost a complete reversal of last season's opener away at Ipswich when they scored in thirty seconds and finished the game at a canter, and we did exactly the same today.

"We learned our lessons from last year. The previous start is dug deep within everybody's minds and we wanted to eradicate that memory and try to get that first win under our belt.

"We couldn't have hoped for a better start. Burnley spent heavily over the summer and they are a good side, you could see that with spasms of the game, and they can hurt you. The start we had though was fantastic, we never gave them a minute's peace and to get a goal so early was brilliant."

Laws went on to heap special praise on three of his players, the two goalscorers and former Claret James O'Connor who was excellent in the midfield. "People know that Akpo Sodje can be a talisman and what effect he can have for this football club," Laws enthused. "It showed so quickly. He ruffled a few feathers in Burnley's camp and he was a catalyst for our three first half goals.

"We are waiting for news on his injury though. He will have a scan but it looks like his hamstring after he pulled up very quickly. It doesn't look clever but I wouldn't want to put a timescale on it before he has the scan."

Sodje scored twice as did Marcus Tudgay and Laws continued: "There were some great performances out there and Marcus Tudgay had a fantastic game for us. It is not his favoured position and he doesn't really like playing there, but he never argues about it and he gets on with the job. He scored a couple of goals and his work ethic was tremendous."

Finally he turned his attention to his only permanent signing of the summer, James O'Connor, who was the pick of all the players in the midfield. "James O'Connor couldn't really have had a better debut. For every ball to be contested he was there, along with Sean McAllister.

"They might not be very tall but the pair of them worked so hard. They were like ferrets around a drainpipe."

As Laws enthused, Clarets boss Owen Coyle vented his anger at his defenders as we simply presented Wednesday with goals and it was hardly what we were expecting in just the first game of the season. He made it simple; he's more than ready to bring in replacements.

"I think the defending was nothing short of naïve," he said. "You would certainly have never envisaged being 2-0 down within three and a half minutes. Brian Laws will be delighted for Sheffield Wednesday but from our point of view they were really soft goals.

"I can accept being beaten and I can accept somebody working really hard to score a goal against you, but I don't think Sheffield Wednesday had to work particularly hard for any of their goals and I left the players in no uncertain terms about that.

"At half time we asked them to take the game to Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the second half, which they did and we had a few opportunities but couldn't quite get the goal to make it 3-2.

"Then again we lost a goal from a throw in. For want of a better phrase it looked like schoolboy defending. Whether they were feeling sorry for themselves at 3-1 down I'm not sure, but that's not what we need. What we need are players with a real desire and a hunger at 3-1 to go and right the wrong.

"It was schoolboy defending and it is clear that if they don't come up to the levels we expect they we will get other players in. There wasn't 4-1 between the teams, but we've learned a harsh lesson, so it is what we take from that and how we bounce back from it.

"If it means changing the personnel then we'll do it. People will be well aware that we are trying to strengthen at the back and we'll continue to do that."

Coyle admitted that suspended Clarke Carlisle was badly missed and he had praise for just three of his players who he was happy with and singled out. "Clarke Carlisle was a big miss at the back and I thought there were maybe three pass marks within the team.

"I thought Martin Paterson did well, Stephen Jordan did well and Wade Elliott played well. But you are not going to win games with three players doing well and if you had told me on Friday night that only three players would have pass marks then I would have begged to differ.

"This was an horrendous start; there is just no getting away from it."
