I think we've had a decent month

Dario G accepted that the Clarets started well against his struggling side and said after the game, “Burnley started well and caused us some early problems. We had some problems with the quick winger, but I thought Adie Moses was very professional and did his best to handle him even though he struggled a bit with his pace.

“But otherwise we coped well in the first half although their goal was a super goal with some great football and I would have been delighted if we had scored a goal like that.”

He thought his side got back into the game only for the second goal to finish it and added, “At half time I thought we’d got to grips with the game and our players thought so too. We came out in the second half and had a couple of chances, but then they scored their second goal which I was really disappointed with.

“I’ve told goalkeeper Ben Williams that I’m disappointed with it because I’ve told him to stay on his line and as soon as I saw him coming I knew we were in trouble. It killed us off and then the third goal went through him as well.”

“We went to 4-3-3 and I don’t think the formation lost the game for us, we just didn’t pass the ball as well as Burnley, particularly from the back. The centre backs dealt well with Ade Akinbiyi, so that plan worked well.”

Steve Cotterill was happy enough after seeing the Clarets get back to winning ways and was pleased with the performance as well as the result. “I thought we were terrific today,” he said. “We were patient and I thought in the first half we could have gone in three goals to the good.

“Everyone knows what Crewe are like, so when it was 1-0 it wasn’t a shock when they came out in the second half, changed their formation and had a bit more of the ball. Arguably we might have scored against the run of play but that happened to us in midweek, so we are not going to make any apologies for that, but once we had that second goal, I felt we dominated the game.

“We knew that Crewe was going to be a difficult game for us. People will look at the run we’ve been on and think that we’d beat them but on the back of a 4-1 defeat, we knew they were going to be dangerous and if you take Crewe lightly, you’ll get picked off. Dario has a great set up there and good luck to them for the rest of the season because they are a great club.”

Looking at the league table and seeing us back in sixth place he said, “I think we’ve had a decent month, been on a good run and to keep getting the wins was good. We have some tough games coming up that we’ll be looking forward to, but we’ll be going into them with good confidence because we’ve played well for the majority of the season and we’ve been pleased with that.

“We’ve rectified the result from the first day of the season, so we can put that one to bed now and move on to the next one.”
