I think it's fair to say we were pretty dominant

It was just their second pre-season game and defender Tony McMahon said after the game: "It was ninety minutes and it was hard work. It was a game that was much needed for minutes that we haven't had of late.

"They're a good team who were obviously promoted last year so we knew it was going to be tough. We tried to win but you could probably see that we were still short on fitness. We'll dig in, and go next week."

He played in a much changed side with new signings on view and more trialists coming on in the second half. "A few of them did alright," he said. "We're all new really because some of them have only been tine building a few days so it's about getting to know everyone. We've now got a full week until the start of the season."

Impressed with his new boss Riga, he added: "You could see little bits. The crowd got a bit excited at times with the way that the manager wants to play but it does take time. We all know that we're short on players so we need to get a few more in next week."

For Dyche it was a fourth game and he was more than pleased with the way his players went about it, whilst understanding how difficult it has been for Blackpool this pre-season.

Speaking after the game he said: “To be fair to José, he has had to try and mould a team together very quickly. Players have come in this week. I have empathy for him as I’ve also had to work with limited resources and squads, not to that extent I must add.

“I didn’t expect them to come out all guns blazing and it’s fair to say that they were on the back foot rather than the front foot. We dominated with the ball but then you have to open teams up and make chances to score goals. It took its time, but I think it’s fair to say we were pretty dominant.

“We showed good habits again and came away worthy winners. We’ll have to come up against different formations this season and today was a challenge away from home.

“I don’t think for one minute that people will be scared of Burnley Football Club but what I am suggesting is that away from home, teams may sit off us. So it is important our players feel that challenge and they did that today.”

He confirmed that he was still looking to add to the squad. "The challenge is still the numbers game," he said. We are still short on numbers and whereas in the Championship we all know you can go out and activate the loan system, in the Premier League you can’t so we definitely need more bodies in.

“I must make it clear that I believe in the group and it’s not about replacing them. We still want to support the group with more players and we are active in the market in an attempt to do that.

“It’s a little bit frustrating that things haven’t quite got there but they are building as we speak and we are hopeful. It’s not easy because we are not the leading side in transfer budgets that is for sure.

“You can imagine the challenges of the Premier League have run away with us over the last four or five years since the last time this club were in the top-flight.

“They are obvious challenges but we know the players we can affect and those that we can’t and we are concentrating on those we feel we can get in the building to support and challenge the group.”
