I had the hump with him

Andy Hessenthaler had again arrived at Turf Moor with his own brand of wind up football, but it is something he enjoys and as always he is in the thick of it.

He was more than happy with yesterday’s goings on. “I think we deserved to win the game because of the way we worked hard as a team. From the front two, right through the team, we defended great and it was a fantastic result,” he said following their first away win of the season.

“You could see the togetherness in the team as we had been wounded. I am pleased and we will keep working hard.”

Commenting on the six yellow cards his side received Hessenthaler added, “It is a passionate game and at times I think more common sense could be used but it wasn’t a dirty game.”

Not bad for someone who has been very fortunate to escape being sent off twice over the weekend.

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill was never going to be happy after seeing his side lose, play as badly as they had done so far this season, and to cap it all suffer at the hands of the officials and have to watch much of the match from the stand.

“I thought we started very poorly and we saved all our best stuff for the last twenty minutes when we still probably did enough to win the game,” he admitted after the final whistle.

“We just didn’t have that spring in our step from the beginning of the game today and the deflected shot early on set the tone. But it was our first sloppy performance of the season.

“We looked what we are and that is tired, and they have some experienced players who know how to grind out results like that.

“We have a twelve day break now and we need to get back to winning ways. Saturday’s game was the first time we’ve lost since Dundee United in pre-season and it tasted sour, as did today.”

On the red card handed to Micah Hyde he added, “I have no complaints about that really, Micah has gone niggling after the ball and he didn’t need to. The penalty had been given and he has to put the ball down sooner or later.”

Finally to his own dismissal and his disagreement with the fourth official he said, “I had the hump with him. He must have mentioned ten times that he would send me to the stands, but when he did I hadn’t spoken to him for a few minutes.

“I’ll be checking the video and appealing against it.”
