I could see Arsène Wenger getting a little bit agitated

Wenger watched his side edge closer to the top of the league and a potential fourth Premier League title and said: "It was closer than you and I expected but we had the chances to score plenty of goals.

"We didn't take our chances and that's why I believe it was very right until the end. It could have been four, five or six but as well they had a chance to make it 2-2 after a corner. In the end you are happy when you miss the chances we missed today but you get the three points.

"I believe the first goal was a great goal and after we created some magnificent chances in the way we created them, we just could not finish the game off. But the first ball from Nasri was fantastic, the finishing of Fabregas was class. We created plenty of chances and Theo Walcott gave you the great response you waited for.

"Yes, we were a bit minimalist in the first half and in the second half we came out with more purpose and put them under pressure. In the first half we played a bit in between and did not push completely through. Football doesn't like that."

For Brian Laws there were a lot of positives to take out of the game despite the result. "I thought we showed a lot of pride and I take a lot of positivity from that performance," he said.

"In the end I was disappointed we didn't get a result. I am sure people will look and see a scoreline they feel will reflect an easy day for Arsenal, but I would beg to differ. They scored a classy Arsenal goal to open the scoring, but we didn't crumble and in the second half we stepped up ten yards and I felt we gave them food for thought.

"By the end I could see Arsène Wenger getting a little bit agitated on the touchline and that was pleasing for me. It's nice to see that and it's a reflection of how hard we worked to stay in the game and frustrate them.

"The players have put in a real good effort and although we led a charmed life on occasions, you have to do that. The really pleasing thing is we stayed in the game right until the end and gave ourselves a shot and that tells me we are going in the right direction."

He continued: "I thought we performed really well, especially in the second half when we got on the front foot and, after the equaliser, looked in a confident mood. Steven Thompson fired over when we might have got a second equaliser, but I am still going to take a lot of positives into the next week.

"We have two massive games now. We all know the games that are going to count most and that is the ones coming up. They are always going to give us that leverage and we have two very difficult games now, against Stoke who have not lost in the league this year and Wolves who are fighting for their lives. These games could make a significant impact and that's our aim."
