I am proud of the players

Howe said: "My emotions are one of immense pride in my team because I think they knew it was a special day for me. I asked them in the build up to the game just to give me an honest performance and an honest week's training.

"This team have never let me down since I've come back. They've been terrific but we needed to dig in and show a different side today. I think this was a totally game to most we've played this season just because of Burnley's intensity off the ball and how they play.

"We adapted our tactics slightly for this game which I think you need to be adaptable and thankfully the players put on a really good defensive display, put their bodies on the line, worked incredibly hard and deserved a point which I thing was probably a fair reflection of the game.

"We prepared exactly the same way as we always do because if you prepared any different for a special game what are you doing for the rest, so there was no difference in the build up but of course it was a special game for Jason and myself coming back here.

"A huge array of emotions run through me today. It was quite surreal really but just really pleased with the performance. Yes, it would have been great if we could have hung on for three but we'll take the one."

Bournemouth's goal came from South African international Tokelo Rantie, his first for the club. Howe continued: "It was worth waiting for, a great strike and I think he's going to be a special player for us, I really do.

"I know people doubt that when the goals haven't come but again he showed real flashes and we just need to get him in the game more. We need to get more of the ball to him because he can turn games, he can win us games.

"The goal was special. I don't know if he'll score one like that every week. He certainly needs to get more tap ins but he's very much a progressing player for us. I don't think we'll see the best of him until some period down the line but when we do I think he's going to be great for us."

He was delighted with his team and added: "Our two centre halves were excellent, our two full backs were excellent, our two wide midfielders were excellent, our two central midfielders were excellent and a special word of praise for both Brett Pitman and Lewis Grabban.

"Brett Pitman I thought covered every blade of grass and he's often  accused of not working hard enough. Well, if you were watching him today you would see a really good shift and Lewis Grabban played wide and did great for the team."

Dyche saw his players fight back to draw with a late Danny Ings goal. “I am proud of the players and I told them that afterwards," he said.

“I asked them not to be disappointed because we’ve taken 24 points from 30 and we’re 11 games unbeaten and top of the league by a couple of points with a plus 17 goal difference.

“It’s hard to keep winning football matches, especially in this league, so I’m not going to over-think today.

“It’s a fantastic record and there’s a lot of good work gone on there and a lot more to come, but I like the fact they are a tiny bit disappointed and that they have that thirst to win.”

We went in 0-0 at half time but Dyche said: “I thought we were excellent in the first half and created a number of chances. Our goalkeeper was very quiet and our framework, energy and some of the passing, movement and quality to open them up was fantastic.

“The game quietened down in the second half and there was a lot of breaking up the play and delay in the general feel of the game. They got an early goal out of the blue with a fine finish, but after that our focus and resolve was excellent and I felt we were well worthy of a point and could have nicked it.

“I thought it was a matter of time and when we got the breakthrough I actually felt we’d go on and win it because by then we were a force going forward."

Asked about the incident when Ings looked to be fouled in the penalty area, he said: “We haven’t had too much go our way there. We didn’t get one at Millwall last week and didn’t get one today either.

“I’ve not seen it again and I’m not sure whether it was inside the area or not, but if it’s not then it’s a foul and their player is in trouble.

“But at the end of the day we can only control the controllables. We can’t control the referees and they have our respect. They do a tough job and a good job, so we roll with the punches and hope to get big decisions go our way at some point.”
