I am not too worried about that slice of luck going our way

Clough saw goals from Charlie Austin and Michael Duff win Burnley the points but admitted after the game: "Our luck was out to be honest and that's frustrating, although we weren't at our best today by any means.

"To concede two goals in the manner we did was extremely unlucky, especially the first one which looked to be going wide but took a nick off John Brayford and went in. The second was the killer one really. We know if we have to wait until the 93rd minute, like we did at Wolves, that we're capable of scoring, but that put an end to our chances really.

"The goals were scruffy and we've conceded a few soft ones lately, so we need to cut that out and get in the habit of being hard to break down again. It all felt like a day when things didn't go our way, but we've got to get over it very quickly now and move on with our preparations for Charlton on Saturday, which is what the Christmas period is all about."

He added: "We didn't really get into our stride for the first half an hour and then, when we did, we went a goal down which was frustrating to say the least.

"We initially started with the 4-5-1 formation which served us well at Bristol City, but we've got a flexible squad and we were able to change at half time to 4-4-2. That worked well for us and we were on top, but then they went and scored when we should really have been level.

"As it turned out, Paul Coutts hitting the post was a big turning point for us. If that had gone in we would have had a great chance of kicking on and winning the game. That sums up the fine margins between winning and losing a game in the Championship."

For Dyche, and he won't need reminding, it  was a first Burnley win in six games since a Dean Marney goal gave us a 1-0 win at Hull, and he was delighted to get it after believing we'd deserved far more than we've got from recent games.

"It was a very good win, a thorough performance and a nice clean sheet as well," Dyche said. "I thought the team went about the game in the right manner and I was so pleased for the lads because I've been beginning to sound like a broken record.

"That's only one defeat in seven now and with some really good performances in there, so we are showing good signings. "

He continued: "I spoke when I got here about finding the mix between the pride in wearing the shirt and the work ethic, while not sacrificing the fluid play. We have found that balance and it's a hard like to find.

"The team has to be defensively strong enough, the framework secure and the attacking players have to have the freedom to open teams up. That has to be glued together by the respect for the shirt and the link with the supporters, and it's coming because we are making this place very difficult for teams to come.

"It's very difficult to dominate a game and although they had a good spell for 15 minutes we got the second goal, which obviously calmed everyone, but I just felt we managed the game very well and ran out worthy winners."

Admitting the first goal was, perhaps, a bit fortunate, he added: "I think we have had our pockets picked a couple of times and a couple of refereeing decisions go against us, so I am not too worried about that slice of luck going our way."

It was Austin who got that first goal but he didn't finish the game with Dyche explaining: "We took Charlie off near the end as he had a tightness in a muscle, but we got him off sharply so hopefully it will settle down quickly.

"Junior was another with a tight hamstring and it was too much to have him in the squad. You have to be careful and you are at the mercy of the medical team, but players come in and out and I am pleased to say they have adapted well, It is a squad game and yet again today I felt the substituted had an impact."
