I am looking for players I can hang a hat on every week

This was the first time Glenn Roeder has come up against the Clarets since he was manager of Watford in 1995. He recorded a win then, and he recorded another one here and after the game he spoke about his two goal scorers who are at opposite ends of their careers.

Dion Dublin got the first goal and of him Roeder said: "Dion has showed all season and again today what a top quality striker he is. He will be remembered as a wonderful example of a good old fashioned English centre forward and he did very well again for his goal."

Young striker Ched Evans is on loan from Manchester City and of him he said: "Scoring goals is a God given talent and Ched is a goal scorer. I thought the chance had gone by the time he shot at goal but somehow he got it and I'm delighted for him. There are elements of his game that he can improve on through coaching but I don't believe goal scoring is one of them."

On the game he said: "It is nice to play well and actually win, which hasn't happened in a few games recently like Sheffield United, Stoke and then Bristol City last week. I was not only pleased to score goals, I was really pleased to keep a clean sheet, I thought the defence stuck to their task well and David Marshall was very well protected."

It wasn't a good day for Owen Coyle and Burnley and you sensed that even the manager has probably accepted there will be no play offs this season. "There are four games left and you never know with the nature of the Championship," he said. "But I felt we had to get a win today to keep us in the mix and it gives us an absolute mountain to climb.

"I'd already said that I felt we had to win all our remaining games, but I have to say they we never got this job because we were the best team in the Championship. We got the job because there is work to be done and we recognise that. We know what we want at the club and we will look to implement that.

"In the short term though we had a chance to be involved in the shake up and that's what's disappointing. The fans have travelled a long way and I hope the players are hurting as much as I am because when they do that and pay an awful lot of money, I expect to see a better showing.

"Before the game we stressed to the players the importance of a good start. They were well versed in how well Norwich played last week at Bristol City, so we knew they would come out of the traps. Unfortunately we gave away a soft, soft goal very early in and we found ourselves with a mountain to climb.

"I feel once we start our passing, we could have got ourselves back in the game and we had the chances. However, Norwich were always a threat on the counter attack and I am just disappointed because that was not a performance where I believe we were anywhere near at our best.

"I stressed to the players that it is one thing being a gifted footballer, but it is another to show on the pitch that you want to be a winner. We have asked the players to show on the pitch what they show on the training ground. They are good players, but they have not shown a level of consistency week after week.

"That is the mark of top players, that's why they play in the Premier League and that's what we have all got to strive for at the football club. I am looking for players I can hang a hat on every week. I know the areas I want to strengthen and we have a plan that we would like to take the club forward. Between now and the end of the season I want the players to show me they want to be a part of that."
