How we've not won it I don't know

Levein decided to make five changes from the side that lost at home to local rivals Nottingham Forest on Saturday but they still failed to score again against the Clarets.

“We had a couple of really good chances in both halves,” said Levein. “But to be fair to Burnley they had their opportunities as well. It was a pretty open match, especially the last thirty minutes.”

Despite this being his first visit for anything over a few minutes in a flood he added, “Turf Moor is a hard place to get points and generally you would be happy to come away from here with a draw and some of our key players have had a rest as well so hopefully we can be fresh and ready to go in the FA Cup on Sunday.

“I thought it was a reasonably entertaining game. The players could have been a little distracted with the FA Cup game but we got out of here with a point. I thought Paddy McCarthy had a smashing debut whilst Stephen Hughes and Gareth Williams were great as well.

“There were a lot of encouraging signs out there. We are still a bit shy in front of goal but we can have a look at that in the next week or two before the transfer deadline. Maybe we can do something about that.

“We were left bitterly disappointed after the Forest game so it was important for us to get something at Burnley.”

Clarets’ boss Steve Cotterill couldn’t believe his side hadn’t returned to winning ways at the Turf. “I’m amazed how we didn’t win that game,” he claimed. “We had enough chances tonight to have won two or three games including one in the first minute and one in the last minute, let alone all those in between.

“We just didn’t get the rub of the green tonight. The ball hit the post and came back out when it could have fallen in or fallen to one of lads to poke it in. The pleasing thing though was that we tried to win and were positive in everything we did.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get that win after a tough run of games against the likes of Preston, Blackburn and Sunderland.

“We did get back to basics though and kept a clean sheet but I really thought we had done enough to win the game. I thought we had maybe five or six chances and how we’ve not won it I don’t know.”

As always it was a team effort and he added, “I’m not going to single anyone out for anything tonight. We’ve got a small squad of players and it is important I say the right things because they will all read it tomorrow.

“They know who has done what, we all know that because we have all watched the game, but we have just got to get on with it. That’s what we’ve got, we only had eleven players tonight and we need to get the rub of the green.”
