Hopefully that can kick start us

Adams obviously thought the turning point was the sending off of his captain Stephen Hughes but he admitted that we won the battles in the penalty boxes at both ends of the ground with the Coventry manager admitting his side was unable to cope with us.

“We were outgunned physically,” he said after the Clarets had beaten his side 4-0. “We couldn’t cope with Akinbiyi and Gifton Noel-Williams and at the other end McGreal and Thomas were outstanding. So really in both boxes, we were disappointing.

“Until they scored, we were well in the game and looked like we were going to score ourselves. McSheffrey was causing them a few problems but their first goal deflated us.”

There was no sympathy from Adams for Hughes following his dismissal and it is clear that the midfielder will face a further punishment from his club apart from the automatic two match suspension.

“He has been sent off for foul and abusive language so I cannot come into the press room and defend him. He has let himself down and let his team mates down,” he said. “We ended up 2-0 down with ten men and when you are 2-0 down with eleven men you’ve got half a chance. He has let himself down, and he knows that. He is an experienced pro who knows he has got to learn his lesson and he’ll be disciplined badly.”

Adams concluded with a little dig at referee Nigel Miller who once again didn’t have the best of games. “The linesman has given the penalty but it was six of one and half a dozen of the other, we have all seen it. But the linesman has given it and the referee has then given it and his indecision was final today.”

Steve Cotterill was happy enough at the end of the game and I would think mightily relieved that the Clarets had finally got the season up and running.

“We were pleased with that and we deserved it,” he said. “When you lose a few games nowadays there is a lot of doom and gloom around the place and you have got to try and do your best to keep everything in check. The players have done that this week because they have trained fantastically well this week.”

Onto the game he said, “I thought we were well worthy of our win today because the endeavour of everybody meant we could have been four up before the penalty. The game could have been over by half time.

“We thought we started like a train but then had a bit of interruption because of Wade, but we altered things about and threw young Chris McCann on and I thought he was excellent. They didn’t give in and the boys were fantastic today, we played some terrific football and I’m delighted with that.

“We needed that, I needed it, my staff needed it, the players needed it, the fans needed it, the Chairman and his directors needed it, they all needed it so we are thankful because we have worked so hard and not had too many rewards so far. Hopefully that can kick start us a little bit and we can look onwards and upwards.

Talking about his strikers, and recalling the penalty miss form Gifton Noel-Williams he added, “We are delighted for Ade and for Gifton and Gifton was pleased to learn at half time that his penalty hadn’t killed anybody. He showed great character and his link play in the second half was fantastic and he kept going until the end.

Chris McCann played all but the first twelve minutes and the last twelve minutes and Steve explained that. “Chris took the bulk of the game and we felt he would be a bit more disciplined in his approach to the game, so that is why we went for him in the opening stages and then when it opened up we brought Kyle Lafferty on because he can nick a goal. The two of them are only kids and we have to be very, very careful with them, so if I don’t use them in the next five matches I’ll be delighted. But in the next breath I’m absolutely delighted with what they did today.

“Chris didn’t even have a suit yesterday and when we said we were wearing suits he had to go out and buy one for £75. He looked alright in it too. We’re going to reimburse him his £75. They’ve both had a good day.”
