He is the jewel in our crown

Ranger's acting boss Gary Waddock believed only the finishing of Andy Gray separated the teams and in the briefest of comments said after the game, “Andy Gray is a proven goalscorer of Premiership quality, who sticks the ball in the back of the net. He's been there and seen it and done it and today he had an opportunity and took it, that is Premiership quality.”

He went on to say, “I was disappointed with the result, but not with the attitude of the players. We paid for that one lapse in concentration that allowed Gray the time and space to score.”

Steve Cotterill meanwhile looked at the scoreline and admitted, “It was a good result for us on a bumpy pitch and very windy conditions. We know how the wind can spoil any game and it was difficult for both sets of lads today and they both worked hard. You could say we're both not going down or going up, but we both tried to put on a decent game.

“We had to be patient really and sometimes you have to wait, but when you are the home team you have got to make the play, try to pass the ball and be the best team and score goals.”

He spoke of the need to make the early second half substitution bringing on Wade Elliott for Michael Ricketts. “We ended up making the change from two up front to one up front, and I know that sounds strange, but I felt we had to make that change and monopolise the ball a bit more. It gave us that and we were hoping we could get Alan Mahon on the ball in those areas and hoping he could slide one in for the strikers. It worked today, although on another day it might not have done.”

Latest recruit Mahon played the ball through for Andy Gray to score the goal and on his new signing he added, “You have to have the players to execute it and in Alan Mahon we have just that, an absolute gem. He was quality all round and he is the jewel in our crown. The goal was good and we could have had an even better goal after that with some fantastic passing.

“I thought we mastered the pitch in the second half and the crowd were great because they didn't get impatient and it all paid off in the end.”
