Having Andy on the pitch was a big bonus for us

Former Claret Brian Laws was back at the Turf for the first time since his Scunthorpe side earned a replay, which they won on penalties, in the FA Cup in 2001. He has one hell of a record as a manager visiting the Turf with Grimsby, Scunthorpe and now he's got off to an unbeaten start with Wednesday and he felt his side could have had an even better result.

“I was disappointed in the end not to come away with all three points,” Laws said after the game. “I thought that overall we were the better side today. We created, and caused Burnley a lot of problems.

“We knew from the start it was going to be a tough game with the inclusion of Steve Jones and Andy Gray. We knew they were going to be more direct than usual and try to get at us but I thought we were very solid.

“I thought we were creative and when you look at the keepers and who was the busier of the two, quite clearly it was theirs. With a little bit of luck we could have had three points today but I mustn't groan too much after the run we've been in. This is a performance and a result that will kick start us off again.

“We had to stop the rot and certainly from the results point of view we have done that. It showed good character as well and after going one down against the run of play we came back straight away.”

Steve Cotterill, who saw the Clarets win their first point in four weeks admitted it could have gone either way. “We could have won the game and they could have won it, so I suppose a draw is a fair result,” he said.

“I thought they looked like two sides who hadn't won for a while, but that's where both teams are at this moment in time. When you are in the run you are in, you hope and sometimes it's not so much about hope, it's about making it happen.

“I have no problems with any effort today, just that missing belief we had earlier in the season that when chances do come, bodies will be there. I thought the confidence levels weren't bad and they reacted in the right manner to the goal being conceded. We will get better with time, and we will keep going.”

One plus for the Clarets was Andy Gray's return to the starting line up. “I think having Andy on the pitch was a big bonus for us, and he'll get better with time and games. That's his second run out now, we managed to get thirty minutes out of him last week and more than seventy minutes this week, so we will now be looking to get more out of him as time goes on.

“At the moment, when you put Kyle up there for the full game he gets tired and gets bullied. That's why we have put him out wide in the past couple of weeks.

“Andy is good at what he does, but we are not there with him yet and it is a gamble. At the moment we are trying to judge two forwards that, by their standards, are off it a little bit and while we have to be pleased to get Andy on the pitch we've also got to be pleased at getting another ninety minutes out of Ade.

“There is no magic wand, but his running was better and we just have to work at the other things to help him out.”
