Entertaining but today it was at the wrong end

He was delighted with his own team’s performance but Steve Kember was not so happy with the performance of referee Chris Foy.

"I can't say enough about their spirit," said Kember. "Dougie Freedman will get the headlines for his three goals but everyone played their part. It would be wrong to single anyone out."

It was difficult also to disagree with Kember’s accusation of double standards from referee Foy. "Let's just say I found some of his decisions perplexing," added Kember. "Wayne was sent off for being the last defender. Fair enough if that is the rule. But if it is a rule for Crystal Palace then it must also be the rule for everyone else.

"How come when their defender brings down Dougie Freedman in the same circumstances and we get a penalty their player isn't even booked?"

Stan meanwhile saw the Clarets go down at home in the first match for the second season in succession and admitted that it was our own mistakes that had cost us.

"When you start a new season you always want to get off to a winning start but it didn’t happen for us," he said after the game. "We didn’t do too badly going forward but we were at fault with all three of the goals we conceded.

"There’s nothing I didn’t know already but the second goal was shocking really. I said before the season started we would be entertaining but today it was at the wrong end."

He did though highlight the performances of two of his new recruits, Lee Roche and Luke Chadwick. "They were very good but they are good players."
