Disappointed when we don't keep a clean sheet

I think George Burley overall should be well pleased that his side picked up a point, they really could have ended the game with nothing but he seemed to be of the idea that his side might go on to win it easily having equalised – obviously not too aware of our defensive record.

“We started well in the first half but they got a goal from a tremendous free kick,” said Burley.

“We didn’t close them down, didn’t cause them too many problems, but in the second half we changed it around a little bit and came out much brighter.

“We had loads of chances and I felt there was only ever going to be one winner but unfortunately we just couldn’t get it in.

“You always want to win games and overall we had most of the possession, a lot more of the chances, and on another night we could have scored three or four goals with a little bit of luck.”

In a more honest appraisal of the game Steve Cotterill thought the result was a fair one in the end.

“We’re very pleased with our performance, especially in the first half, and I thought a draw was a fair result,” he said.

“We didn’t start too well and for the first ten minutes or so they dominated the ball but we soon got ourselves into it and played some terrific stuff through the midfield. If we had maintained that in the second half I think we would have gone on to win it.

“They had a bit of pressure in that second half and when you bring the likes of Peschisolido on you know he is going to nick a goal. If we’d gone 2-0 up though I think we’d have won it so we are disappointed that Micah’s first half header hit the post rather than go in.
Overall, a draw was probably fair.”

He did have something to say about our goal. “We’ve just been asking Jean if he could’ve found the corner any more than he did. It was off the inside of the post, was a terrific free kick and we are pleased for him.

“For their goal Jensen was a bit unlucky because it looked to come off his studs and we are always disappointed when we don’t keep a clean sheet.

Maybe if Frank and John McGreal had been playing we could have kept that clean sheet but the lads have done fantastically well to go out there and get another good result.

Finally he was asked if there had been any progress regarding our attempts to sign Stoke striker Ade Akinbiyi and he sounded very positive.

“There’s no news at the moment,” he said, “But maybe something tomorrow. I don’t think you are ever fully confident as a manager until the contract is signed and you are shaking hands, so Thursday might just be a big day for us.”
