Dennis Wise had a nibble at everybody and the dog

"It was pretty hectic stuff towards the end," said Wilkins. "We made it extremely hard for ourselves, because we had to retain possession of the ball, but we didn’t do that.

"They had the chance at the end and really we should have been going back to Turf Moor. That chance they missed, they call that a sitter in our game."

"I said to them at half time that we hadn’t started the game. I thought we were poor, and we had to raise our game to have any chance of winning it, and they did exactly that in the second half. Dichio missed a sitter in the first half, which I reminded him of at half-time.

"Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled for everyone that we are through but I thought we were diabolical at times. In the second half when we were a goal up and they’d had a man sent off, we were trying to score everytime we got the ball.

"Against ten men we were saying, ‘We’ll have a chance, you have a chance, we’ll have a chance, you have a chance,’ and we could have paid heavily for that.

"We should have concentrated on retaining possession and I’m sure we would have gone on to score more goals.

"I didn’t so much put a dampner on things in the dressing room by telling the lads but if you want to become better than we are then we must learn these lessons. Sometimes it is easier to tell people after they have won."

Stan was somewhat philosophical as the Clarets’ cup dreams came to an end for another year.

"It wasn’t our day really," he said. "We had a few opportunities and didn’t take them. Alan Moore had a fantastic chance that I could have scored.

"We had three or four fantastic opportunities, the first being when we had a penalty shout early on.

"Ian Moore then had a one-on-one with the keeper and he made a good save whilst Glen got through and the keeper made another save. Then there was Alan’s opportunity at the end.

"We had to change things around after Dichio’s goal and try to salvage something.

"There was a lot going on out there. Dennis Wise had a nibble at everybody and the dog today but I told you that before the game. But it is a bit much.

"I cannot expect, and with all due respect I say this, the referee and other people on the fringes of the game to know what’s going on."

On to the incident that saw Paul Weller sent off Stan added, "I don’t want to be an Arsene Wenger but I didn’t see it. But if Paul has been irresponsible I will deal with it and severely."

And finally, and despite the nibbling he said, "Dennis Wise is a good friend and I wish him and Millwall well in the next round."
