Youth team title hopes fading

Last updated : 18 April 2011 By Tony Scholes
Last Monday we looked favourites. It appeared in our hands with only Rochdale able to catch us and with an inferior goal difference. That changed last Tuesday. Rochdale didn't only win their game in hand but they turned the goal difference round, from five worse than ours to four better as they hammered Blackpool 9-0.

That put real pressure on us the day after as we faced form team Preston, but it was the Lilywhites who won it 1-0 with a penalty and that left us with an uphill task regarding the league title.

With no game on Saturday we had to watch on as both Rochdale and Preston advanced further. 'Dale hit another five leaving them three points clear of us. One win from their remaining two games will now just about put them out of our reach.

Preston won at Carlisle and they too now, along with Port Vale are looking favourites to pass us. Both have a game in hand and both will go above us if they win that game in hand.

It's looking a case of what might have been for the young Clarets. All we can do now is go out and win our two remaining games against Morecambe (home) and Wigan (away). The first of them comes this Saturday when we play that last home game against Morecambe.

It's been a good season though no matter what happens with five of the squad winning professional deals, and that's what it is all about.

We must mention Morecambe, the other winners on Saturday with the remaining three games all ending in draws.
