Youth team out of cup as Tranmere win

Joe Jackson - scored after coming on as a sub

For much of the game it was a very much below par Burnley side but in the closing stages, after we'd made a triple substitution, we came so close to at least taking the game into extra- time.

We never quite got going in a first half that was lacking in terms of good football and the only goal of the half was one to compete with the first team's opener at Watford on Saturday. Curtis Woods, playing at right back, played the ball back to goalkeeper Josh Cook who inexplicably let the ball roll under his foot. He turned but couldn't prevent it from crossing the line.

At 1-0 down at half time we looked for a response but it all seemed flat and it was only when we made the substitutions that we really started to get into it. Terry Pashley brought on Shay McCartan, Mehdi Lazaar and Joe Jackson in the 61st minute but there wasn't to be an immediate change in fortune as we conceded a penalty.

That made it 2-0 and you wouldn't have expected anything other than a Tranmere win at that point. But Burnley came back. Jackson scored to reduce the deficit and we missed three decent chances after that as we looked for that equaliser.

In the end it didn't come and we are now out of all three cup competitions.

The team was: Josh Cook, Curtis Woods, Alex Coleman, Neil Yadolahi, Ed Williams, Steven Hewitt (Shay McCartan 61), Dave Lynch, Alex Mullin (Joe Jackson 61), Adam Evans (Mehdi Lazaar 61), Joe McKee, Ross Wilson.
