It's even better for Wrexham who have played a game less than the two teams directly below them and two less than Preston, meaning a win and a draw from their games in hand would see them go top.
Those two teams below them were both beaten. Rochdale went down 3-2 at Walsall but the shock result of the day was the one that saw struggling Blackpool beat Carlisle 3-2. It was only recently that
Carlisle led the league but this latest defeat has left them six points adrift, and it could have been worse but for two late goals reduced the deficit. It wasn't a performance to please coach Eric Kinder. "We didn't get anywhere near the way we can play and it was a disappointing performance," he said. "We got our goals at the end but if I'm being honest we didn't deserve anything at all."
Leaders Preston had lost their last two league games, with Burnley inflicting the second of those defeats, and followed that up with an early exit from the FA Youth Cup, going out in a penalty shoot out against Gateshead.
It was a different story on Saturday as they beat Accrington 6-1 including a hat trick from Brandon Zibaka. The performance delighted their coach Graham Alexander. "It was very pleasing," he said. "We competed in the right manner and we got the basics right."
Elsewhere there were wins for Bury, Port Vale and Shrewsbury. Bury beat Fleetwood last Tuesday while Port Vale and Shrewsbury secured Saturday wins against Oldham and Macclesfield.
Burnley are in action on Wednesday in a re-arranged Youth Alliance Cup tie against Walsall at Gawthorpe and on Saturday we travel to the Crown Ground to play Accrington in the league.
