Two wins sees Wrexham go top

It was Burnley at the top at the end of the first week of fixtures, courtesy of a 6-0 win over Oldham Athletic at Stalybridge, but with our game called off because of Morecambe's Lancashire Senior Cup commitments, it gave some teams a chance to go above us, with Wrexham the only ones to do so.

Wrexham had beaten Morecambe 2-1 last week, in a game played at Airbus at Broughton, and this week they were winners again, this time beating Shrewsbury.

Wrexham had goalkeeper Chris Maxwell to thank. He was the star of the show, although the visitors, who included former Claret Gareth Taylor in their starting line up, certainly had their own chances. Apart from the two goals from Mathias Pogba and Adrian Cieslewicz, they also hit the Shrewsbury woodwork three times.

A very strong and experienced Preston side suffered defeat to Accrington last week, but this week they fielded a much younger side and got their season moving on with the biggest win of the week, beating Macclesfield 4-0 at the Moss Rose.

Adam Barton gave North End a first half lead, and the other three goals all came from second half headers, firstly Jamie Douglas and then Barton with his second. Substitute Matt Dudley completed the scoring.

Coach David Unsworth was scathing of the Accrington defeat, but he was much happier this week. He said: "Jamie Hoyland and I are very delighted with the performance of our young reserve team. They've worked their socks off and put in a great performance."

In the other game played, Oldham showed they had recovered from the mauling against the Clarets, and in their second home game beat Tranmere 2-0.

Joe Jacobson and Connor Hughes were the goalscorers for the Latics but coach Lee Duxbury was still not happy despite the win. He admitted the second half had been better than the first half but said of his team: "The players failed to retain the information and did not do as they asked which was to stop their No 10 [Ryan Fraughan] at source as he is a good football."

"That is football intelligence," he said. "The senior players ought to have sorted that out on the pitch and not waited until half time. I would have done that, even when I was a young kid, as it is common sense to stop their number 10 who was causing problems."

It is League Cup week next week, a competition Burnley haven't entered, and so we have no game. We're next in action on 7th September when we host Accrington at Turf Moor.
