The kids love Archie

18-year-old Archie, who is in the second year of his scholarship at Turf Moor has been named as the League Football's Apprentice of the Month for November. This is not an award for a youngster at Burnley, or even a regional award, but a national award from all the young players at all of the 72 Football League clubs.

His coach, Terry Pashley, said: "It is thoroughly deserved. He is a very dedicated young player with a lot of ability who has made great strides since becoming a full time player with us. Hopefully he will go on to good things and this is fitting recognition for his efforts on and off the football field."

Archie, like all the scholars, also follows an Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence Programme which sees them studying for an NVQ. Archie has added six further modules to his work to give him the opportunity to apply for a place at university should he not earn a professional deal.

However, it is the additional work that he's carried out in his own time that has seen him win this award. When I spoke to a proud Patrick McKiernan, Burnley's Head of Education and Welfare, he told me: The main reason for nominating Archie is his willingness to give up his time to help and support others.

"Last year, Archie worked with the Playing for Success based at Turf Moor, supporting year 7 pupils in numeracy and literacy.

"This year, Archie has become a personal mentor for a year 10 student in a local high school who is experiencing behavioural issues within school. Archie visits the school to help support the boy and to set targets with regard to his future behaviour."

There were further accolades from Jason Blake, acting Head of Youth Development. "When you talk about players working hard and listening and wanting to learn, Archie is a great example.

"We want to produce players, but we want to produce the person first and I think Archie is a great example of that.

"The way he conducts himself is fantastic and if he is able to pass that onto some of the younger players then that's going to be of great benefit to the club. He is a great role model for the younger players at the club and I am keen to see how that develops and kicks on."

Archie will receive his award at half time during our next home game against Doncaster Rovers on Boxing Day, and will receive it from Barry Kilby.

Well done to him, it's an award he can be very proud of winning.
