Taylor goals lead to big away win for Clarets

With none of the youngsters, Richard Chaplow excepted, required for first team duty and with Rhys Carpenter the only other absentee through illness it meant we could field one of the strongest sides we have been able to turn out all season.

And what a difference it made as we dominated the game virtually from start to finish and hardly gave our hosts a look in and could have won it by even more.

We were in front after just ten minutes after good work from Tom Ince down the left hand side. He was able to pass the ball across the box where the returning Alex Taylor slotted home.

It was Taylor again eight minutes later, and this time with a good header, as he met a right wing corner taken by Marc Pugh.

Two goals up and coasting but we kept going and it was Pugh who scored the third when he raced on to a long ball out of defence to dink the ball past the advancing Chester keeper.

That took it to 3-0 and that was the half time score. Chester had hardly posed a threat and Michael Hale in goal had just had a few crosses to deal with.

The second half started with Cayne Hanley on for Taylor who had limped off at half time and it took us only two minutes to add a fourth. Chester had returned with a more physical attitude and gave away a free kick outside the box.

As the Chester keeper was still lining up the wall Paul Scott got the nod from the referee to take it and placed his kick into the opposite side of the net past the forlorn keeper.

Neal Trotman completed the scoring with a towering header from a free kick and that was midway through the second half. There probably should have been more but to their credit the home side never gave up.

It was though a good performance and shows just how capable we are when we can turn out anything resembling a strong side at this level.

The forward play speaks for itself with five goals but the defence was again in top form and is really becoming a very strong unit at this level for the Clarets.

Being able to turn out this sort of side all season would surely have brought about better results in the earlier part of the season and allowed us to compete in a higher Merit League than the one we have found ourselves in.

The youngsters still have five Merit League games to play and are awaiting news of their Lancashire FA Youth Cup Final date against Oldham. Clarets Mad contacted the Lancashire FA to try and confirm the date and had to tell the county FA which teams were in the final.

Only Paul Scott from Saturday’s team is ineligible for that final.

Team: Michael Hale, Danny Pitham, Ryan Townsend, Neal Trotman, Gary Carter (Rob Henry), Paul Scott, Marc Pugh, Darrell Avery, Joe Booth (Adam Jones), Tom Ince, Alex Taylor (Cayne Hanley). Subs not used: Mark Crossley, Nicky Platt.
