Shakers win Alliance title

The weekend games had left Bury one point ahead of Wigan in the table with Wigan having one game remaining, against third place Rochdale away.

A win for Wigan would see them win the league by two points, they would still win it on goal difference should they draw but a defeat would hand the title to Bury.

Wigan were expected to get at least the point they needed, going into the game on the back of a 23 game unbeaten run, but that run ended and their title hopes disappeared when Rochdale scored the only goal of the game just before half time.

Bury, a club who are very much pushing forward with youth development, have won the title, I believe, for the first time. Last season they were seventh with Blackpool crowned champions.

The Clarets finished the season in ninth place.
