Penalty miss keeps Clarets top of totesport

Burnley have been top of the league all season, but a run of one point from three games has opened things up and with having no game his week it gave Preston the chance to overtake us at the top of the league, provided they could beat Oldham at Stalybridge.

Preston lost their first three games this season, including a 2-0 defeat to Burnley at Chorley, but had since gone on a run of eight successive wins. Fielding a strong side again they were set to go above us on goal difference with a ninth win, and with a game in hand.

They won their penalty after just ten minutes but Barton hit his spot kick way over the bar from which they never fully recovered. Coach David Unsworth described it as a lacklustre performance and warned the players: "If there isn't a reaction there are always other people waiting in the wings to play in our reserves."

Morecambe came out on top against Bury at Kendal despite Bury taking a 1-0 half time lead. Two Chris Shuker goals in the second half along with one from Stuart Hendrie changed things in Morecambe's favour before Bury pulled back a late goal from the penalty spot.

In the other game played this week Tranmere were easy winners at Macclesfield. It was goalless at half time but that soon changed after the break when Ellis Appleton gave Tranmere the lead. Max Power added another two before Cole Stockton completed the scoring.

Burnley were due to play Preston this coming Tuesday but, although there has been no official notification of the game being called off, it will have to be rescheduled because of our first team game against Coventry. There is, otherwise, a full fixture list.
