McCartan starts season with a hat trick

Shay McCartan - opening day hat trick

It was his partner Jason Gilchrist, on his competitive debut for Burnley, who opened the scoring as early as the second minute when he headed home an Adam Evans cross, but McCartan didn't have long to wait to open his account.

Again Evans was the provider but this time he played the ball across to McCartan who hammered home from the edge of the box. Ten minutes gone and 2-0 in front and things got even better for the young Clarets.

Gilchrist had come close to his second, but then the powerful and pacy McCartan picked up the ball on the half way line before going on a trademark run and hammering in a shot and it was 4-0 by half time with another spectacular goal, this time from Dean Overson.

The second half was a quieter affair and coach Terry Pashley took the opportunity to make three substitutions. McCartan wasn't going to be denied. He thought he'd won one penalty but was cautioned for going down but then was fouled again in the box and this time saw the spot kick awarded.

He made no mistake to completed his first hat trick in Burnley colours and give us a resounding 5-0 win.

The team was;

Josh Cook, Aryn Williams (Charlie Holt 70), Alex Coleman (Jack Errington 70), Tom Anderson, Dean Overson, Adam Evans, Alex Mullin, Steven Hewitt (Nathan Lowe 70), Archie Love, Shay McCartan, Jason Gilchrist. Subs not used: Callum Jakovlevs, WIll Kinder.

The youth team play their first home game of the season next Saturday with Accrington Stanley the visitors at Gawthorpe.
