Getting closer in the reserve league

Last updated : 04 March 2011 By Tony Scholes
We started the day with Wrexham in second place, five points behind us, with Preston a further point behind, but it was Preston who secured the win and they are now just three points behind with two games in hand.

Preston beat Wrexham 4-2 with all the goals scored by members of the first team squad. Paul Parry gave Preston the lead on 17 minutes and after half an hour later it was 4-0 as both Iain Hume and Chris Brown chipped in with goals before Brown got his second from the penalty spot.

It all changed in the second half as Wrexham came back as Marc Williams provided goals for both Christian Smith and David Brown but a Preston side, that also included midfielders Darren Carter and Darel Russell, eased through to the win.

The biggest win of the day was at Tranmere as they hit Accrington Stanley for six. It took the home side until the last minute of the first half to take the lead. That came from Max Power but before the half time whistle had blown they'd doubled that advantage through Lucas Akins.

Adam McGurk made it 3-0 on the hour and Tranmere then took total control. Akins completed his hat trick Power helped himself to a second.

We watched Shrewsbury play out that awful 0-0 draw against us last week but this week they travelled to Macclesfield and beat the home side 3-1. Benjamin van den Broek, Ben Evans and Ryan Woods were the scorers for Shrewsbury. Kynan Mason was the Macclesfield scorer, equalising the van den Broek goal.

The final game saw Oldham beat Morecambe at Stalybridge. Reuben Reid gave Oldham an early lead but it was 1-1 at half time with Dan Parkinson equalising for Morecambe on the stroke of half time.

Oldham made three half time substitutions and Connor Hughes, one of the three introduced, got the winner midway through the half.

Burnley have no game next week but with Preston in action against Oldham it could see them draw level with us on points and that would mean us relinquishing first place in the table for the first time this season.
