Dev squad claim big win against Geordies

Kevin Ly scored the third goal

Against a similarly young Newcastle side, coached by former England international Peter Beardsley, we had to come from behind after 19-year-old Alex Gilliead gave the Magpies an early 1-0 lead with a superb strike.

We equalised midway through the half. Steven Hewitt played a diagonal ball for Waqas Azam and the youth team captain's cross was met by Ntumba Massanka. He miskicked the ball but got a second chance when a Jamie Frost shot rebounded to him and he scored from close range.

Two minutes later, Frost gave us the lead, converting a Kevin Ly cross and the pair linked again five minutes later with Ly this time finishing well into the corner.

We held the 3-1 lead thanks to some fine saves from goalkeeper Danijel Nizic and we increased the lead with Massanka getting his second to give us a 4-1 win.

The team was: Danijel Nizic, Waqas Azam, Alex Whitmore, Shaun Hobson, Luke Conlan (Hamam El-Fitouri ht), Brad Jackson, Brandon Wilson (Andreas Bianga 80), Steven Hewitt, Kevin Ly (Aiden O'Neill 65), Jamie Frost, Ntumba Massanka.

It was a win that delighted dev squad coach Michael Jolley. After the game he said: "It was a typical Burnley performance with a clear identity of how we want to play. We played with great energy, great pressing and some real quality too, so overall I was delighted with the performance.

"We want to get the message about our style of play deep into the academy. We have regular staff meetings to make sure we are all working in the same way, all the way from the first team down.

"Definitely in the under 18s and the development squad, we want the messages to be the same, so for when a young player steps in, he already knows what is expected of him."
