Defeat for youths in final game

Conditions were poor because of the biting wind throughout the game which left spectators, some at least, suffering from the cold from not too long into the first half.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much to keep us warm, certainly once our visitors had taken the lead on 16 minutes with a soft goal.

They had very much the better of the conditions in the first half and I felt that we might be ok in the second half should we hold them to one up to half time. We nearly did with their crucial second coming in stoppage time.

The second half started more brightly for us but we didn't threaten a goal and the game was up when they added a third after a poor defensive mistake effort midway through the half.

A Khius Metz effort, which brought a good save from the Fleetwood goalkeeper, was our only effort on target and in truth we didn't seriously look as though we would cause Fleetwood much trouble at all.

Our team this morning was: Connor King, Waqas Azam, Shaun Hobson, Lewis Norvock (Clarke), Christian Hill, Jamal Crawford (Nashé Chakwana), Andreas Bianga (Mark Howarth), Brandon Wilson, Brad Jackson, Josh Dolling, Khius Metz. Subs not used: Marcel Wusiewicz, Ntumba Massanka.

Of some interest, on my first visit to Gawthorpe since the Autumn, was to check out the work that's been done. It still resembled a building site in places with ploughed up fields where the club intend to lay new training pitches, but the work that has been done already has left us with a collection of pitches that looked to be in outstanding condition.

There's so much more to be done, but this has been a big and positive start to the work that the club intend doing down there to provide our players with much better training facilities.

The work has meant a difficult season for the youth team and I'm sure that's reflected in some of the performances that have, overall, meant a disappointing season.

Hopefully things will be better next season but for now, the six second year scholars await the news regarding professional contracts.
