Clarets youth league hopes get boost

Last updated : 07 March 2011 By Tony Scholes
Rochdale had played in midweek and beat strugglers Carlisle to go five points clear at the top of the league but they couldn't improve on that on Saturday when they surprisingly fell to defeat at Walsall.

The good news for them, and for us, was that both Oldham and Blackpool, the two sides with the same number of points as us, were both beaten away from home against Stockport and Wrexham respectively.

'Dale still lead by five points ahead of Port Vale, who like ourselves had no game, with us, Oldham and Blackpool just a point further away. The games in hand for the chasers will determine just how close they get to Rochdale with Port Vale able to pass them by a point and Burnley able to go ahead of them on goal difference.

Walsall's win over Rochdale edges them closer to the top clubs whilst one to watch is Preston who have recovered from a disastrous start and are now reasonably well positioned with games in hand. They beat Tranmere and there were also wins for Morecambe and Wigan with the remaining game between Macclesfield and Bury drawn.

Burnley play one of their games in hand tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Accrington before facing Shrewsbury at Gawthorpe next Saturday morning.

The latest results and fixtures are shown below along with Burnley's goalscorers and links to the results, fixtures and league tables for both youth and reserve teams.
